The Student Trustee Exchange

Boy, does time fly! I feel like I just started the new semester yesterday, and in just a couple of weeks I’ll be studying for midterm exams! As busy as school can get, there are a few students on our campus that made time in their hectic schedules to make a difference for others.
Bianca Mangabhai, Daniel Ellington, Nia Robertson, Jeffrey Wyskiel, and Teena Dorn all started out as GSU students in Professor Don Wlordarski’s Advertising and Marketing course last semester. What began as a class project to plan a store opening or fundraiser turned into a group’s selfless efforts to establish an annual festival that will raise money for the GSU Promise Scholarship. The upcoming GSU Promise Fest on October 4 and 5 is a fundraiser created by current students to help future students earn their Bachelors degree.
The GSU Promise Scholarship was created by President Elaine P. Maimon to assist economically disadvantaged students to complete a Bachelors degree at GSU. This competitive scholarship is awarded annually to a number of students who are enrolled in the Dual Degree Program between partnering community colleges and GSU.
This scholarship has not only helped students, but it has also enhanced our campus community. Many current scholarship recipients have volunteered for GSU, are active in student clubs and organizations, and even mentor other students to help them successfully earn their Associates and Bachelors degrees. As a GSU Promise Scholarship recipient myself, I’ve aimed to show my gratitude by making the most of my college experience and by being an engaged member of my university. I truly appreciate the initiative and all of the hard work this group of students has done to support this incredible program.
So how can you show your support? By attending the GSU Promise Fest, of course! On October 4 at 7 p.m., there will be a comedy show with Damon Williams, former host of “Showtime at the Apollo,” and a past BET featured comedian. On October 5, there will be a 5K Run/Walk at 9 a.m., and a performance with Terisa Griffin and GSU Idol Audrey Cher at 7 p.m.
