Alice an A + performance
Those who attended one of the showings of A...My Name is Alice on November 6, 7, and 8 at GSU's Center for Performing Arts were treated to a rousing evening of musical fun, featuring some of the best theatrical talent GSU has to offer.
A...My Name is Alice is the second student stage production under GSU's Theater and Performing Arts (TAPS) program. The show starred GSU students Aarika Hughes, Lorell Jones, Killeen McClowry, Lois Nemeth, and Deirdre L. Webb, and was directed by Dr. Patrick Santoro, Assistant Professor of Theater and Performing Arts at GSU.
Audience members were seated on the stage of the CPA, which along with impeccable mood lighting created an intimate, elegant atmosphere. This closeness created a connection between the performers and the audience that would not have been possible in a larger setting.
The show, which according to Santoro in the play's program is "a celebration of women," lived up to its billing and more. Alice depicted women in a variety of life situations, celebrating their triumphs, mourning their heartaches, and dealing with the craziness that is life. The show featured several musical numbers, as well as a few skits, including a few hilarious poems.
The performers of A...My Name is Alice were wonderfully entertaining, complementing each other perfectly. Musically, while all of the performers were fantastic, the standout performers of the show were McClowry and Webb. McClowry sang two outstanding solo numbers, "I Sure Like The Boys", and the heart breaking ballad, "The Portrait" in the first act. However, it was Webb who stole the show in the second act with her rendition of the ballad "Pay Them No Mind" and the hilarious "Honeypot", which featured Webb as a blues singer with an inability to discuss sex without referring to food, hardware, horses or swimming.
A...My Name is Alice was one part musical, one part comedy, and one part drama, perfectly blended together for a fun and memorable evening at the theater.
